Today fellow survivors I will tell you a story. This story is about a strange young man who knew he was somehow different from the masses. He was never accepting what he did was good enough and pushed himself for better. He was never accepting society was good enough and searched tirelessly for alternatives, for anything that wasn't within his realm of experience. This is when he uncovered the undead. At first just something curious, somewhat romantic, new and exciting: he studied everything but of particular interest were zombies and vampires.
Though some would say this was a morbid past time he became obsessed with zombies. Wondering where the myths came from and marvelling at the symbol yet never ending symbology surrounding them. A symbology that crossed over in importance but not meaning with many other undead. While zombies were the symbol of inevitable death, vampires were the symbol of never-ending life. One completely natural, the other completely impossible.
I will discuss what came of the young boys zombie interested near the end but first go in depth about one particular part of his vampire research, the extent of which could not be covered in a single post. Understand this boy was different, he would walk into a room and immediately change the feeling in the room depending on his mood. The number of people in the room didn't matter, 1 or 500 he could control the aura everyone felt. Control might be the wrong word because he didn't yet know how to control his own moods at that age but regardless whatever he felt or deeply wanted everyone else to feel, they would. The boy was often alone and enjoyed his own company more then any other but found he could not stand to be alone. He constantly searched for companionship and to physically be near others. This was because he could feed off their energy, he could feel what they felt, he could energize himself by draining them. Leaving the encounter stronger, more mentally alert and ready to take on the world while the other person or people would be left tired, weak and sad. These examples along with others, a natural dislike of the light for instance, or the amount of times he had been in situations he should have died but somehow his body didn't give up; fueled the boy in his search of the supernatural. The stories of vampire couldn't be true but there had to be truth in them. Suddenly he was approached.
One night the boy opened his e-mail like he did every night and there was a message from a girl he had never met and would never meet to his knowledge. She told him he was a vampire and gave him groups to research. He looked at the groups and saw nothing less then cults who worshiped "vampires" but they defined vampires differently then one would think of them. To these cults a vampire drank the life energy out of other people, just like the stories, had incredible powers (some the stories didn't even mention), but the big difference was these vampires didn't drink blood, they literally drank energy. One group dedicated itself to the research of this and how the original transcriptions in other languages the word blood is actually life. So when vampires drank, they drank life, not necessarily blood. These cults believed a vampire was a normal human who simply had this ability and could perform great feats through mental willpower. The cults said few people knew if they were a vampire but those who knew the signs could pick them out. And the boy had to admit he matched all the signs he could find mention of. He e-mailed the girl back for more information, she told him where to meet her and those who might become his guides. She mentioned that she hoped he might pick her.
The boy went to the meeting and found one of the strangest events he had ever encountered. While he came half full of wonder and half expecting a bunch of goth kids he was not prepared for what he was in store. Dozens of people dressed in the most elegant and at the same time the most sexually arousing clothing he'd ever seen. And they were beautiful. The ages ranged from as young as fifteen (or maybe younger) to early fifties at his best guess. Instantly you could see two classes of people in the room, those who were and those who weren't. The ones who were floated about as smoothly as if every step was taken to music, even though the only sound was of these people talking. They also dominated almost all of the speech, pausing only long enough for those around them to ask a question or make a compliment. And those around them? They were the others, they followed almost part bent over, obviously willing to kiss the ground at the command of one of the ones who were. They hung on every word said and jumped to every sight whim. But the thing that the boy noticed most, the moment he walked in, nothing changed. The room carried on as if he wasn't even there. Not a single person's aura shifted and no energy came to or left him.
He stood for a long time it seemed, days for all he knew, just watching. As he watched it seemed some of the ones who were had favorites among those who weren't. They got no less attention from the others but one would always be closest, one would always be running to get drinks or food or whatever, one would also be the ONLY one to ever touch the one who was. And the ones who didn't have favorites? They could only be described as having the time of their lives, like a beautiful woman with so many suitors trying to gain her hand. In fact that is exactly as the boy describes it. But it was men and women with men and women suitors. Finally (though it may have only been seconds) a woman walked up to him followed by her group and started speaking to him. The boy had never felt like this before, she was the most beautiful woman he'd ever seen and easily ten years his senior, he felt like he wanted to be with her always, like she wanted to be with him, but at the same time his entire being told the boy that he was stronger then her. And as if she could read his thoughts the woman told him that he was one of the ones who was. The boy learned many things that night, some of which still haunt him but two things fought in his mind as he walked home with a list of e-mails, phone numbers and (probably fake he thought) names. One thing was that those who were, had everything. Whatever they wanted, they never had to work and they never had to strive, they simply had to make their wishes known. And the other thing was that each of the ones who were choose a partner to feed from, and would feed from that man or woman until he (or she) become nothing, simply broken and useless with no hope, will, energy or life left. This could take weeks or it could take years but it always happened and the one who was simply moved on to play with others and choose a new partner. Voluntary slavery. To use another person like that was wrong, it was evil, these people were the monsters they claimed to be and the worst part of it was, they accepted it.
The boy never e-mailed any of the e-mails, never called any of the numbers and never looked up any of the names. He turned his back on them because the chance to live an easy life and learn to harness this "power" was not worth making a slave out of another human being.
I tell you this story because the boy eventually learned to control his moods, control his energy and thus control the energy of the people around him. He began using this knowledge to try and better people instead of letting his own sorrow destroy those he wanted to be close to. Eventually he began bringing out the best in people and people actually wanted to be with him just so they could feel good and they couldn't explain why. Neither could he until even later. He eventually learned about leadership. What he had was not a supernatural power it was simply leadership. By the way he held himself and the energy he carried he could influence others, he was a natural leader but as he learned leadership can be both positive or negative. Negative leaders can cause much more damage then if there was no leader at all but a good leader can make a group of people into an invincible team. The cults were simply people who had become such powerful leaders that they could use that leadership to sway the weak willed into doing anything and then they used that sway for their own gain. Leadership is not a position, rank or political standing. Leadership is the willpower and understanding to influence other people. Leadership comes naturally to some people and must be learned by others. And it is true most people will never reach the kind of leadership to influence 500 people or to make someone dedicate their entire life energy to you, but that does not mean it doesn't exist. Like with all things the levels of leadership are different for every person and if a person has just enough leadership to lead a group of a dozen people to safety and survival, then I'd say that person has just enough leadership to really be worth something: or to cause the deaths of those people, leadership is also a responsibility and one that can ever be taken lightly. Which is also why it needs to be taught and learnt by those who do use it for self-improvement, for enriching lives and ultimately after the fall, for surviving. Instead of being taught by those who would use it to create slaves.
The other research of the boy, the research that led to such a large interest in zombies. He eventually came across enough evidence that he could no longer doubt their existence so combined with zombies represented in society and ow culture and people reflected them, the study of zombies became one of the boy's passions and eventually led to him starting a blog dedicated to them.

In the crosshairs
The question presented: how do I tell if a person trying to enter my safe house is a looter, a raider or another survivor?
I will address this question in a number of points. I'll try to keep everything in some sort of order because I have a lot to say on the matter. This is a vital point which will effect many survivors as they face a situation they may not have prepared for properly. An entire protocol should be discussed with the group very shortly after a safe house is secured.
One clear indicator if a group approaching a safe house is friendly can be children, anyone with children at least gets a chance to explain themselves in my books. That being said children can also be used as a lure. All children can be deceiving and children raised in the wrong way can be more brutal than grown men (child soldiers are an example in real life and Carl in The Walking Dead is an example in zombie fiction.)
Also looking scared and generally running for their lives. Of course some people are amazing actors so this just gives the advantage of not looking like an enemy from the start. Also it is worth noting at this point that anyone in a dangerous enough situation will appear frightened and chaotic.
In general it's all about body language, something most men actually have a lot of issues with and thus it is important to have either a man who understands body language (an actor, a police officer, etc.) or a woman who is hardened enough to pull the trigger. Hate to stereotype but it's just the reality, women know people better but empathize more quickly. This may seem like a rather non-scientific way to determine something with as serious a nature as this but regardless it will be the defenders best indicator. It is thus imperative to develop a good sense of understanding body language; this skill will be useful from the moment of meeting your first other survivor until the end.
Thinking about this first question leads to a burst of potential situations. These situations come from the idea of asking a couple of questions: "Who wouldn't I shoot on sight?" "What would I do to make myself look less threatening?" "How do I see through the disguise?"
Who wouldn't I shoot on sight?
Well anyone who didn't look like a threat or I hadn't already had negative dealings with. And this even includes groups of men: I would hate to mow down some men or start a gunfight when it turns out they were just the men from a group near by who left their children and elderly to search for supplies. So for instance a group calmly walking in the middle of the street they could be a band of raiders OR they could be just a surviving party. Most people aren't expecting to have a sniper's cross hairs on them after the fall. Again that comes down to body language. Figure out who the leader is and what he looks/acts like, first impressions are a hard things to go off of but 9 times out of 10 they are right on the money for anyone with some skill in reading people. And the people who do look like threats are going to realize this really quickly and start trying to not look like a threat. Which makes our jobs as survivors a lot harder and leads to the second question.
What would I do to make myself look less threatening?
The answer is simple: anything and everything. There are some situations where it is a benefit to appear more threatening and to intimidate an enemy, group or even individual but for most situation if approaching a safe house the easiest way to be let in peacefully is to appear to be of no threat. And I for one would hate to be honestly looking for no trouble, but maybe just meal and a place to sleep and be shot because I looked like a threat. Well having children helps as already mentioned. Keeping them safe is of course a great concern but letting them be seen shows that I have something to lose and to protect so I am not looking to be rash and violent. Leaving all weapons holstered also lowers the threat level by a great amount, this is an option not to be taken lightly. A way to make yourself appear less threatening while still being able to defend yourself instantly is to keep a sidearm in hand but not at the ready, keeping the arm outstretched and barrel pointed safely toward the ground is a clear indicator of no harm intended and while this may mean not getting the first shot off it will allow to react to any shots fired instantly.
Another option is to learn the art of the diving quick draw. This is an act which should be practised for hours until it can be completed in any area, on any terrain, with any pressures, to absolute perfection. If that is done this move can be a life safer. The act is simple in design but hard to complete. Throw your body in one direction, to one side or the other normally offers the best mix of changing position and arm movement. Diving forward is the lease expected motion but the least change of position which makes it easiest for the enemy to adjust their shots. It also requires the most arm movements to draw your weapon and bring it all the way up your torso and over your head to fire. Throwing your body back offer the least arm movement and thus the quickest firing position, simply draw, point and fire. Again going backward does not make the enemy have to do much to adjust their aim. Second, as the body moves the arms must be moving to quick draw your sidearm. If you have ammo to spare a shot can be fired as soon as the weapon is out of the holster, this will do two things: surprise the enemy who will already be surprised by the bold and strange maneuver, and use recoil to move your arm up to firing position even quicker. This first shot would be while you are still in the air and has almost no chance of doing damage, the real firing will be done once you hit the ground. Firing position and aiming should be done during the final part of the dive so the second shot and more if needed can be taken upon contact with the ground. Note that being on the ground does not cause as many issues in a gunfight as many people seem to believe. Not only does the target become unfamiliar and smaller but also allows the most stable firing position and allows for easy movement while maintaining that stable position i.e. rolling. While this does throw off aim it is the quickest way to move from stable position to stable position while covering some ground. And especially in an area with no cover making yourself a small and foreign target will be your greatest asset.
That may seem to have little to do with being less threatening but being confidant in your ability to defend yourself even with your weapon holstered will present you as calm and poised showing that you have nothing to hide. Some one who is uncomfortable and insecure will appear as such and could be taken as being dishonest or looking for an opening to attack. Remember that a confident warrior does not actively look for openings, he simply notices them or he creates them the moment they are needed.
Clothing can also be a simple of threat. A person in leather straps, spikes, and punk hair simply looks more of a threat then a person in jeans, a sweater and uncombed short hair looks. This is again stereotyping but when it comes to survival in a world which has lost it's current society every little thing will be a matter of survival. Even more so a group of people dressed in a pattern or a common "uniform" will appear much more threatening then a group who are all dressed differently. While dressing the way you want is every person's right it is fair to note that to the true survivor dressing in a manner which will give a better chance of not being taken as a threat by other survivors is almost as important as dressing to protect from bites.
And of course the final question being how do I see through the disguise?
Not an easy question to answer but it is the true rout of the first question. I have not discovered a formula to do this. I have no set 100% way to determine. Rest assured I am searching for one. But for now I would say the best way is through feeling. Feeling is a weird thing to go off of but it is often all we will have as survivors. Interview with the internet's top zombie forum's leader
Well survivors I think it is valuable to stick together, nay it is invaluable. So here is an interview with a man who leads one of, if not, largest zombie survival forums on the internet. Mister Whaturmuva (Matt)
ZLC: What inspired you to start this forum?
Whaturmuva: My interest in what people would do during a ZPAW. It's just a hypothetical, but I enjoy examining human nature.
ZLC: How much work do you put into the forum to keep it in it's top ranking?
Whaturmuva: Next to none at this point. I know how to work the search engines well enough that I have gotten every site I have made to the top of google.
ZLC: Do you have a large team of admin to help you? If so have you actually met any of them or just online?
Whaturmuva: Nope, just me and one moderator. Have not met in real life but he seems like a pretty good guy. Overall the forum is fairly spam free and the members are all really great.
ZLC: There are lots of forums out there about zombies. What makes your's as awesome as it is?
Whaturmuva: It seems to be the largest of the very few that looks at zombies as a true possibility. Most just write them off and in every thread there is the "zombies can never exist" posters. Here we don't allow that type of behavior. To make it here one needs to expand their mind and really examine what is possible.
ZLC: Have you been Admin on any other forums?
Whaturmuva: Yes, I've made a variety of forums all which have gained a lot of popularity and high google rankings. I actually had another top zombie forum in the past but had to sell it due to life circumstances. The new owner seemed to have no passion for the site and it died just a few months later.
ZLC: So you're also running a zombie roleplay site. Do you have any experience with roleplaying games or play-by-post?
Whaturmuva: Can't say that I do. I created it for a member of the main forum and he had problems. Meanwhile the site got to the top of google but had no direction. Recently I have picked up a few users to start building it and I expect it to thrive very soon.
ZLC: There's also the zombie blog. How's the format for that site work? With multiple people contributing to it.
Whaturmuva: It really doesn't, the blog is fairly dead as I can't find anyone to contribute to it. I'd gladly let someone take it over if they want it but I haven't been able to find anyone who does. It's "Bloggers Wanted" is actually in my forum signature at all times
ZLC: Favorite zombie film and why?
Whaturmuva: Land of the Dead. It shows how humanity would survive in times after the world was already filled with zombies.
ZLC: Why a zombie forum and not a forum about something else awesome?
Whaturmuva: To make a forum thrive the admin must have interest in the subject. Zombies have held my interest for a long time and it just was a natural choice to go back to.
ZLC: Are you a true believer?
Whaturmuva: I don't believe there are any zombies on this planet at the moment. But I know this universe is ever expanding and we don't know a ton about it. I think it's a possibility just like anything else.
There you have. A true leader who believes all it takes is passion, knowledge and good people to get the job done.

I actually had another top zombie forum in the past but had to sell it due to life circumstances. The new owner seemed to have no passion for the site and it died just a few months later.
ZLC: So you're also running a zombie roleplay site. Do you have any experience with roleplaying games or play-by-post?
Whaturmuva: Can't say that I do. I created it for a member of the main forum and he had problems. Meanwhile the site got to the top of google but had no direction. Recently I have picked up a few users to start building it and I expect it to thrive very soon.
ZLC: There's also the zombie blog. How's the format for that site work? With multiple people contributing to it.
Whaturmuva: It really doesn't, the blog is fairly dead as I can't find anyone to contribute to it. I'd gladly let someone take it over if they want it but I haven't been able to find anyone who does. It's "Bloggers Wanted" is actually in my forum signature at all times
ZLC: Favorite zombie film and why?
Whaturmuva: Land of the Dead. It shows how humanity would survive in times after the world was already filled with zombies.
ZLC: Why a zombie forum and not a forum about something else awesome?
Whaturmuva: To make a forum thrive the admin must have interest in the subject. Zombies have held my interest for a long time and it just was a natural choice to go back to.
ZLC: Are you a true believer?
Whaturmuva: I don't believe there are any zombies on this planet at the moment. But I know this universe is ever expanding and we don't know a ton about it. I think it's a possibility just like anything else.
There you have. A true leader who believes all it takes is passion, knowledge and good people to get the job done.

Looking for leadership team
The Zombie Research Society is a group dedicated to spreading knowledge of the impeding zombie Apocalypse and encouraging new research in all areas involving the undead.

To begin a chapter requires three ZRS members to work as a leadership core for the chapter. To round off the leadership team I am looking for a Vice President and Sergeant At Arms. The whole team together decides on chapter meetings, research projects and policies.
President:
Provides direction for the chapter. Maintains contacts with the ZRS and near-by chapters. Being the public face of the chapter and gathering material for members to access. Along with other duties relating to maintaining and advancing the chapter.
Vice President:
Acts as president went the president is unavailable and is responsible for keeping notes and documents for the chapter.
Sergeant At Arms:
Makes sure everything runs smoothly and on time. The SA also handles bringing new members into the chapter.
I mentioned research projects and meetings before. Each chapter is required to complete two research projects per year. These research projects can be of any sort and are decided on by the leadership team. They can vary in size and severity based on the size of the chapter and commitment of its members.
Chapters are required to hold five meetings a year at least two of which must be open to the public. The nature, location and times of these meetings are up to the leadership core.
